WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is an injection containing a purified form of protein from bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. This protein temporarily reduces muscle activity in your face, which helps minimize frown lines and crow’s feet. Stopping these muscles from doing their regular contractions helps prevent these lines from getting deeper and reduces them for a limited time.

Activity in the muscles around your eyes and brows, combined with a decrease in skin quality as you age, lead to fine lines. These lines typically become more noticeable over the years.
Botox injections result in less activity from these muscles for a given period, which reduces fine lines and makes your skin appear young. You can still move these muscles to some degree until the effects wear off, but this activity won’t be as pronounced.
DOES BOTOX HURT?
Getting Botox injections might cause some slight discomfort, such as a pinching feeling, but you shouldn’t have any considerable pain. If you have a high sensitivity to pain and are worried about having Botox injections, talk to him about taking steps to minimize this sensation, such as by using a topical numbing cream.
IS BOTOX SAFE?
Botox is safe, but there’s a slight chance of having side effects, some of which can be noticeable. These include swelling or drooping of your eyelids, muscle weakness, and vision problems. Thomas Pulice, PA-C will discuss the possible side effects of Botox injections with you before administering them. Keep in mind that it’s normal to have some soreness at the injection sites.
HOW MANY INJECTIONS SHOULD I GET?
Thomas Pulice, PA-C bases this on how deep your crow’s feet and frown lines are. In general, you might need:
- Three injections around your eyes to reduce crow’s feet
- Four injections around your brows to reduce frown lines
- Five injections in your forehead to reduce frown lines
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX LAST?
This varies for different patients, but the results of Botox injections usually last for four months or less.
